UFC 274: Oliveira vs Gaethje

Oliveira vs Gaethje

Charles Oliveira defends his UFC lightweight belt for the second time against Justin Gaethje. Will Oliveira be able to keep the belt or will Gaethje be the new champion?

Oliveira vs Gaethje

Oliveira captured the vacant UFC lightweight title at UFC 262, courtesy of a TKO victory over Michael Chandler. He then successfully defended the belt at UFC 269 by earning a submission victory over Dustin Poirier. The victory against Poirier extended Oliveira's winning streak to 10 fights.

Gaethje will get his second shot at the UFC lightweight title in Phoenix, Arizona. He won the interim belt with a TKO victory over Tony Ferguson at UFC 249, but lost to Khabib Nurmagomedov in a unification fight at UFC 254. Gaethje has fought just once since then, beating Michael Chandler by unanimous decision at UFC 268.

Oliveira relies heavily on Brazilian jiu-jitsu and won several major titles in his native Brazil before transitioning to MMA. He maintained a 12-0 record after turning pro and was later signed to join the UFC.

“Do Bronx” still relies heavily on his Brazilian jiu-jitsu skills and 20 of his 32 wins have come via submission. The 32-year-old holds the record for most submission wins in the UFC (15). He is not to be underestimated even if none of the fighters kiss the canvas, claiming nine KO/TKO wins. The TKO of Chandler at UFC 262 reset the UFC record for most submissions, which now stands at 18, and includes TKOs/TKOs and Submission.

Gaethje was a two-time Arizona state wrestling champion in high school and an NCAA Division I All-American; however, he doesn't tend to rely on his wrestling skills very often. The 33-year-old fighter tends to opt for a more interesting approach while standing and has earned a reputation for hitting hard. “The Highlight” boasts 19 KO/TKO wins, with just one by submission and three by decision. Gaethje also fires extremely powerful blasts, which he often uses to weaken his opponent before launching hand attacks.
